Tandem was established in 1983 to mark the year of the disabled. The main goal at that time was to provide help to those who had suffered a stroke or were disabled. Over the years Tandem has grown and now provides transport and arranges social activities for the elderly and disabled living in the area to the north of the South Downs, roughly between Petworth, Rogate and Fernhurst.
The core of Tandem’s work is providing door-to-door transport to and from medical appointments. This service is open to any elderly or disabled person in the Tandem area. A Tandem volunteer takes the patient there and back by car or in a wheelchair equipped vehicle, depending on need. The service is based on a very moderate mileage charge.
Tandem arranges outings almost every second week throughout the year to places of interest in the south east. A regular Tuesday Club organized by Tandem provides an opportunity to meet others, play cards or board games and have tea. There are also other social events in summer and winter. In association with the Midhurst Library, Tandem provides a Housebound Reader Service. These social activities are open to Tandem members and membership only costs £5 per year.
